DNS propagation and its impact on your domain
DNS propagation, also called DNS propagationrefers to the process of updating information about a domain name on the Internet. When changes are made to a domain's DNS records, such as redirecting through name servers or adding MX records for email use, propagation is initiated. This process allows DNS servers worldwide to be updated with the latest information.
The automation of this process can take up to 24 hours, as it takes time for the changes to be forwarded to all existing DNS servers worldwide. The duration of propagation varies depending on the type of DNS record. For example, changes to NS (name servers) or A records (which map a domain name to an IP address) can propagate in less than 24 hours, while some can be updated even faster. In rare cases, however, a particular record may take up to 72 hours to propagate.
Check DNS propagation
Online tools such as the DNS Checker are available to check the progress of the propagation. Simply enter your domain name, select the DNS record type and start the search. The results of the DNS checker tools can contain various symbols that give you information about the status of the distribution:
- All crosses ❌ - The distribution has not yet started. This usually occurs when the record you are looking for does not exist. However, if the record has existed in your domain's DNS zone for more than 24 hours, this could indicate a problem with the propagation.
- A combination of the sign of the cross ❌ and tick ✅ - Dissemination is underway and should be completed in good time.
- All check marks ✅ - Distribution is complete, your data set is fully updated worldwide and should function properly.

If problems occur after checking whether the dissemination process has been completed, it is recommended that the DNS cache on your device and perform the check again. This step can help resolve possible cache issues and ensure that the latest DNS records are retrieved correctly.
