To configure the WordPress media settings
Introduction
It's no secret that people are fascinated by eye-catching visual media. That's why you should carefully select, organize and manage the media files that will be displayed on your WordPress-based website.
In this tutorial we will show you how to use the Configure media settingsthat let you control the visual appearance of your images and other media files available on your website.
We start
First, log in to your WordPress admin dashboard. You can do this by entering your domain followed by "/wp-admin", e.g. "mydomain.ch/wp-admin", where "mydomain.ch" stands for your domain name.
After logging in, use the menu bar on the left to go to Settings > Media.
You will then be taken to the "Media Settings" forwarded. Here you can start with the configuration.
Configure media settings
Now that you are on the desired page, please check all the settings and change them according to your individual preferences.
Image sizes
When an image is uploaded, WordPress saves the original image and automatically creates three additional copies - a thumbnail, a medium image, and a large image. The original image is cropped and scaled according to the parameters you set.
In the first section "Image sizes" you can control the maximum dimensions of the corresponding image type.
Thumbnail size - In these fields, you must define the "Width" and "Height" in pixels of the thumbnail images. If you leave the checkbox activated, WordPress will cut off images that do not correspond to the specified dimensions.
Medium size - Here you must specify the "Max. width" and "Max. height" in pixels for medium-sized images.
Large size - Here you must enter the "Maximum Width" and the "Maximum Height" in pixels for large images.
In the following screenshot example you can see the WordPress default dimensions. If you have a lot of images on your website, we recommend that you reduce these sizes to improve performance and reduce memory consumption.
Upload files
This second section contains only one checkbox, which is selected by default.
Organize my uploads into month and year based folders: This setting allows you to save your images in separate folders by year and month, according to the date they were uploaded. Organizing your media files in this way is very convenient for future management of your website. We therefore recommend that you keep this setting.
When you have made all the desired changes, please click the button "Save changes"to apply the changes.
Now you know how to adjust the image size and organize your uploaded images. We hope that this information was useful for you and will help you optimize your images to get the best results.
